SDN Bootcamp Spring 2013 Sections

Due to the tremendous interest, there are two separate sections:

• Tuesdays 4pm-5:30pm (February 26 - March 19) in CS 3310
• Wednesdays 4:30pm-6pm (February 27 - March 20) in CS 1240 (Meet in CS 1221 on Wednesday, March 13)

Before Bootcamp Starts

Assignments

• Watch "Gentle Introduction to Software-Defined Networking" by Scott Shenker
• Do parts 2 and 3 of the OpenFlow Tutorial
  If you are on campus, you can download the Mininet 2.0 virtual machine image from our local mirror.

The schedule below is preliminary and subject to change.

Session 1 (February 26/27)

During the Session

• Introduction to Mininet and OpenFlow
• Understand and run the hub application

Session 1 Notes

Assignments

• Everyone: Read sections 1-4 of the OpenFlow 1.0 Standard
• Floodlight Users: Read the How to Write a Module documentation for Floodlight
• Pox Users: Read the Pox APIs documentation for Floodlight

Session 2 (March 5/6)

During the Session

• Build a learning switch application
• Build a round round load balancer

Session 2 Notes

Assignments

• Extend the learning switch application to act as a firewall
• Extend the learning switch application to perform network address translation (NAT)

Session 3 (March 12/13)

During the Session

• Review and test your firewall and NAT application
• Build a round-robin load balancer

Session 3 Notes

Assignments

• Add at least one extension or optimization to your load balancer
• Finish firewall and NAT

Session 4 (March 19/20)

During the Session

• Build a shortest-path routing application

Session 4 Notes
